Oury favorite thing about the ending is that you can step back and take a look at Matt Reeves’ clockwork screenplay, and find hints all the way through that tell us what was going to go down. Some of these clues are subtle, symbolic foreshadowing. But others are very much in your face, and you can’t believe you missed them.

So the first big hint of foreshadowing is the opening song, Ave Maria. [clip from something]. This song is a latin translation of a hail mary [long football pass]. No, the prayer, hail mary. It says that Mary is blessed amongst women, and so is the fruit of her womb Jesus.

Now, everything in this movie is an inversion. In our ending explained video, we talked about how the riddler is an inversion of bruce wayne. They are both orphans who believe that they are acting on the side of justice. So, the song Ave Maria is an inversion as well. It’s a celebration of the love of God and the holiness of Mary.

But, little orphan riddler sang it as part of an orphan choir, at the event where Thomas Wayne announced he was running for mayor. This event starts as something hopeful, beautiful–like the birth of christ. But, as we learn, Thomas’s mayoral run leads to him turning to Falcone for help, which leads to his murder–which leads to the Renewal fund falling under Falcone’s control and the corruption of Gotham city, so this song marks the original sin of Gotham, when Thomas wayne–with the best of intentions, tried to change the city.

Like christ, his death turned him into a martyr–except the person he inspires is his son, Bruce. The final lines of Ave maria are pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. So this song, which is a celebration of purity–the purity of the Waynes–is also acknowledging that human beings are flawed, dying sinners. Just like Gotham City.

Just before the Riddler murders Mayor Mitchell, we see numerous headlines of the post, framed on his wall. Like his administration’s crowning achievement, the Maroni drug bust. But if you pay attention, he’s talking to someone on the phone about the election, and he says I thought that the Times would have put us over, why are we still tied. He is likely talking to Carmine Falcone about fixing the election for him. And he’s referencing the post because he controls the newspapers as well.

And later the riddler uses the mayor’s blood to paint the word lies across the newspapers. Later in the movie he reveals that Thomas Wayne had a newspaper reporter killed. So not only does Falcone control the press, but he suppressed the reporters who wanted to tell the truth. It’s heavy implied, I thought, that this reporter was the riddler’s father, and his murder made him an orphan. So the riddler would have a particular disdain for those who use the press to tell lies.

All of this is foreshadowing that the riddler will later use SOCIAL media to spread his particular brand of the truth. He reaches out to his followers, and arranges a kind of influencer meetup, just like cosplayers who want to emulate his character.

Now those followers are driven by desperation. They see the economic advantages of citizens liek Bruce wayne, and they identify with the riddler’s message. I think we ca all relate to that. We’re all always looking for a way to do more with less. Like I’m always looking for a bargain online.

That’s why I like Deal Dash, the sponsor of this video.

Back to the riddler. His obsession with the press is also apparent in his last riddle [black, blue, dead all over]. Now the original riddle is what’s black and white and red all over–the answer is a newspaper [austin powers, homonym]. He changes red to dead to show that, yes, he’s going to kill a lot of people–but also, that the press is dead. Truth is dead, and needs to be cleansed with a holy flood.
