French parliamentarians on Wednesday passed a divisive bill that is intended to strengthen France's ability to deport foreigners considered "undesirable."

French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist majority and a conservative party have found agreement on the immigration bill, the country's interior minister said Tuesday.

Gérald Darmanin said he was "proud" to champion the bill, which he said would enable "greater firmness against foreign offenders" but also allow 7,000 to 10,000 undocumented migrant workers a year to get residency permits and fill jobs in sectors that have difficulty hiring.

Advocacy organizations have criticized the bill as a threat to the rights of migrants.

Other Members of Parliament denounced the law as falling foul of "the principles that unite the people of the French Republic," as Mathilde Panot, head of a leftwing parliamentary group, put it.

On Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron defended a new immigration law that has split his party and sparked the resignation of his health minister, calling it a necessary "shield."

France, he said, had "an immigration problem," and the law was needed to reduce illegal immigration but also facilitate the integration of documented arrivals.

"It is a shield that we needed," Macron said about the law that has caused a revolt among his party's deputies, and prompted health minister Aurelien Rousseau to quit the government.
