This commercial from Gateway 2000 tells us how we can get a computer including printer and display for only $1499 (plus shipping and tax). Gateway 2000 was known for low-cost computers and despite what it might look like now, this was one of them. $1499 was a good deal at the time.

It was still possible at this time to assemble a computer from parts yourself for less than buying one assembled from a low-cost company at this time. Better purchase contracts and presumably lower labor costs would reverse this over the next couple years. At that time, assembling your own computer actually became common not to save money, but to make a more capable (gaming or overclocked) computer.

Note the presence of the Intel jingle at the end, this was not ubiquitous as it is now, in fact even in commercials from two years later, some Gateway ads omitted this jingle and forwent the co-marketing money it brought from Intel.

Also notice the lack of mention of the internet in this ad. This wouldn't last much longer after this, by 1999, every computer mentioned the internet and most included a modem so you could access it, and probably a little bit of "free" internet thrown in too. See other ads I have from Gateway from 1999 showing the rapid drop in pricing that took place in this period.

This promo aired during an October 26th, 1997 showing of X-files. This was season premiere week for Fox, although X-Files did not premiere until the week after.
