The History of Amed (Diyarbakir) - Capital of Kurdish Resistance

The city of Amed is truly an old peace of work. Dating back to the old assyrian kingdom the city was once known as Amit and Amida. However recent arabic and turkish nationalism has changed the name to Diyarbakir. Why is this? And why is the city today known as The city of Kurdish resistance?
