Yussef Dayes began his musical
Yussef Dayes began his musical journey listening to his dad’s jazz records, and performing with his brothers from age 4. He’s gone on to study with the legendary Billy Cobham, and began regular gigging with his brothers in cosmically-inclined, Afrobeat outfit United Vibrations.
According to UK´s The Independent “each beat surges through him like an electric shock, and sometimes you can’t tell if it’s him playing the drums or the drums playing him. He moves with an indefatigable vigor and dexterity, drawing beats from Sixties jazz, from bossa nova, from early dubstep, from J Dilla, from just about anywhere.
"It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says about his debut album “Black Lotus”, a mainly improvised album that shook up the music scene upon its 2016 release. With a hum of jungle, grime and broken beat – it has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment.
