Ray Hayden here, demonstrating how I use diesel fuel to make the fire burn, but gasoline to create a safe fuse to light the fire.
The thing is that diesel fuel burns, but gasoline explodes. If you tried to start a debris burn on your property with just using diesel fuel alone, however, you may have noticed that you can actually put a match out in the diesel fuel without it starting to burn.
However, because gasoline instantly lights up, we can make a nice safe fuse that saves matches, and keeps us safe from the explosive property of gasoline at the same time.
While this is a dangerous activity (there is no such thing as a safe fire after all) this is a safer way to get a burn to actually start with one match, and keep it burning.
The other thing about gasoline is that - while it does spark up and burn very rapidly - that is the issue, if the burn pile is not "ready to burn," you need the time for the diesel fuel to ignite and help to make things happen... using gasoline as the fuse gets things going, but the diesel fuel gets the fire burning, where gasoline alone might simply burn out, without starting the fire at all!
