“McCarthy is a polarizing prospect. He has all the tools, and NFL coaches will love the intangibles, but evaluators want to see him put the offense on his back and take over games. It’s not that he can’t, it’s that he hasn’t really needed to given Michigan’s play style and schedule.From an evaluation standpoint, his tape leaves you wanting more because the Michigan offense didn’t ask him to consistently push the ball downfield (he averaged only 6.8 yards per attempt over the final six games of the season). To his credit, McCarthy consistently converted on money downs and stepped up whenever his team needed him to make a play. Scouts consistently bring up his intangibles as a strong selling point for their coaches because of his retention, recall and competitive toughness. Some despise when a team’s win-loss record is attributed to a quarterback, but McCarthy’s 27-1 record as a college starter will be catnip for NFL teams.Based on feedback from the NFL, McCarthy is expected to be drafted in the top 50 picks, the question is how early? Is there a team in the top 25 enamored with his long-term outlook? How the quarterback dominos fall this offseason will provide better clarity for which teams might be targeting a quarterback in the mid-first round.”
