Overview of difficult diagnosis in Scleroderma:
Achieving diagnosis of scleroderma is often long and difficult, it's such a rare disease and during the early stages which can drag on for months or years, it may resemble many other connective tissue diseases.
The initial symptoms may be vague like fatigue and cold hands which can cause doctors, and patients, to wrongly assume that the symptoms are psychosomatic.
Some doctor shy away from diagnosing scleroderma arguing that as there is no cure and no treatment specifically for it there's no benefit in labelling it.
It's also common the early stages for one diagnosis to be changed for another.
It is nerve wracking not knowing for what's wrong with us. We think we need a proper diagnosis to get proper care and it can also become a battle for self esteem, to reassure ourselves and others that we do indeed have a real illness.
