Brazil has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It is becoming increasingly popular in the sectors of industry and tourism, and its population numbers continue to escalate. This type of growth invariably leads to urbanization, which refers to the development of urban areas and the migration of people from rural areas into city centers.
In Brazil, 89 percent of the country’s entire population lives in urban areas, and 6 percent in favelas. The urban population is growing by 1.1 percent each year. In 2018 a large number of Brazil’s cities have a population between 300,000 and 1 million inhabitants. There are 37 medium-sized cities of such population size, 19 cities ranging between one and five million inhabitants, and only two urban settlements with 10 million or more inhabitants.
