Mumtaz Mahal (1593-1631), The Stunning Mughal Empress whom the Taj Mahal commemorates.
Mumtaz Mahal was the Empress of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. She married him at 19 on 10 May 1612, 410 years ago.
She married the Emperor at 19 and lived around the time of England’s Stuart King James I.
Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan had 14 children, including the Shah’s favourite daughter, Jahanara Begum and his successors.
She died after suffering a haemorrhage while giving birth to her 14th child in 1631 at 38.
Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal as her mausoleum, and it took 22 years to build.
English poet Sir Edwin Arnold describes the monument as “the proud passion of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones.”
