Tokyo has filed a diplomatic protest after the two Chinese coastguard vessels approached a Japanese fishing boat on October 11 in waters off the disputed islands Japan calls the Senkakus and China refers to as the Diaoyus. Tokyo says Beijing’s vessels have refused to leave despite repeated warnings, and after what is reportedly the longest time Chinese ships have stayed near the disputed islands since Japan declared the territory as under its control in 2012. China, Taiwan and Japan all claim sovereignty over the group of islands.
