cAMP plays a key role in controlling various metabolic process like glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis and glycolysis. The first two pathways are stimulated by cAMP whereas the lat are inhibited all resulting in increased blood glucose levels. Fructose-2,6-biphosphate mainly controls glycolysis and gluconeogenesis which is blocked by cAMP by inhibiting Phosphofructokinase-2 (PFK-2) activity. cAMP also inhibits glycogen synthase activation at the same time stimulates phosphorylase enzyme resulting in enhanced breakdown of glycogen.
