The omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, support an effective immune system by helping to resolve inflammation after an infection has subsided. Deficiencies in these micronutrients can delay this response, which could be important in the cytokine storm seen with severe COVID-19 patients. Preclinical models illustrate how EPA and DHA are converted into specialized pro-resolving mediators that are associated with protection against acute lung injury. In this clip, Dr. Rhonda Patrick discusses how omega-3 fatty acids participate in resolving inflammation during an immune response.
