The story lines of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark mirror the German archeologist Otto Rahn’s incredible adventures in the South of France in the early 1930s. Rahn concluded that German Christian traditions preserved many elements from its pre-Christian pagan past. Nationalist German archeologists (Ahnenerbe) believed that "heretic" esoteric gnostic sects, such as the Templars and Cathars, held the secret to the Holy Grail, which is traditionally depicted as a Chalice, which alchemically is symbolic of the Womb.
