A Brahmin came to Gautama Buddha to ask him about soul, heaven, rebirth and dharma. He heard that Buddha denied their existence. Buddha asked him how he knew the truth of these things. He said humans have five senses that can help them know the truth. He gave examples of water and air to show that some things can be seen and felt while others cannot. He said God cannot be seen or felt by any sense organ and no one has ever seen him. Therefore, he said thinking about God is useless and humans should accept the real truth.
He explained that dharma is the path from darkness to light and the guide for living a good life. He said dharma is based on experience, science and justice not faith, worship or grace. He said dharma is the solution for human-made sorrows which are more than natural sorrows. He said dharma’s goal is to make every living being happy. The Brahmin was impressed by Buddha’s wisdom and felt free from his pride and prejudice. He thanked Buddha and bowed down to him.
