In honor of Haitian Flag Day, Kristen learned some Haitian Creole, or Krèyol, for this conversation with Michel DeDraff from the MIT Haiti Initiative, which promotes full education in Krèyol. Learn more at https://haiti.mit.edu/ or @MIT-Ayiti.

Haitian Creole, known more commonly by its speakers as Krèyol, is spoken by as many as 12 million people. It’s the national language of the Caribbean nation of Haiti, where it is co-official alongside French. It’s spoken as well by diaspora communities worldwide. Kreyòl emerged in the 17th century CE as a lingua franca among enslaved West and Central Africans, who hailed from a diversity of language communities. It bears close resemblance to other Creole languages that are historically related to French, including Louisiana Creole and the Antillean languages of Guadeloupe, Saint Lucia, and Dominica. Since the turn of the 21st century, there has been a shift toward its inclusion in the literary and educational spheres due to the work of language activists.
