Determination of Percentage Volatile Matter in a Coal Sample
Experiment from Engineering Chemistry Syllabus of UTU.
Procedure
The residual coal in the crucible in analysis of volatile matter is then heated without lid in a muffle furnace at 700 ± 50 οC for half an hour. The crucible is then taken out, cooled first in air, then in desiccators and weighed. Heating, cooling and weighing is repeated, till a constant weight is obtained. The residue is reported as ash.
