Hello, I’m Dr. Sislena Ledbetter, Professor of Psychology in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia and your host for A Health Mind.  The purposes of this television series is to educate and keep our community informed about mental health, from public policy and environmental factors, to the various disorders that affect healthy minds.

Dr. Afiya Mbilishaka is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia.  Dr. Mbilishaka research interests focus on the use of traditional African cultural rituals for contemporary holistic mental health practices and narrative therapy, racial identity, and “psychohairapy” which is our topic for this edition of A Healthy Mind.  Utilizing 10 years of quantitative and qualitative data, Dr. Mbilishaka and here research team have developed a theory which seeks to initiate meaningful and accessible mental health programs that link hair care to self-care.
