How Much Iodine Do We Need?
Iodine is a mineral our bodies need to make thyroid hormones. The body uses thyroid hormones, which are produced with the help of the iodine we consume, to control metabolism. Thyroid hormones also play a role in ensuring proper brain and bone development during pregnancy and infancy.

We don’t produce iodine, so we must eat foods rich in iodine to keep our bodies properly supplied.

How much iodine do we need daily and what foods can help?

The amount of iodine we need each day differs by age:
• Birth to 6 months need 110 micrograms
• Infants 7-12 months need 130 micrograms
• Children aged 1-8 need 90 micrograms
• Children aged 9-13 need 120 micrograms
• Children aged 14-18 need 150 micrograms
• Adults need 150 micrograms
• Pregnant women and teens – 220 micrograms
Here are some foods rich in iodine
• Cooked oysters
• Greek yogurt
• Enriched wheat bread
• Seaweed
• Cooked fish sticks
• Baked cod
• Nonfat milk

People identified as having iodine deficiencies can add iodine-rich foods to their diets or may be prescribed an iodine supplements or sometimes thyroid hormone supplements. Think you may be low? Talk with your doctor about your concerns.
