A significant increase in petrol and diesel prices is expected from July 1. Petrol prices will rise by Rs7 per litre and diesel by Rs8 per litre due to higher international market prices. Recently, petrol increased by $4.4 per barrel and diesel by $5.5 per barrel. The government might raise the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) from Rs60 to Rs80 per litre, further increasing prices.
Since May 1, petrol prices have dropped by Rs35 per litre and diesel by Rs22 per litre due to a global market slump. Despite this, the government aims to collect Rs960bn from the petroleum levy in fiscal year 2024-25, with about Rs77 per litre tax on both fuels. These changes impact inflation, affecting transportation, agriculture, and food costs.
