Ever lost an anchor or had an anchor get really stuck to the bottom? It's not fun. And it's especially not fun if you are out in your kayak by yourself and you can't free your anchor.

One of the most popular kayak anchors is the grapnel anchor (pronounced Grapple Anchor). It is easy to use, it stores well, and "grapple anchors" don't cost very much.

We've recently noticed some kayak anglers rigging their grapnel anchors the wrong way (with the anchor line in the top hole). The best way to ensure you can always break the anchor free from the bottom is to rig it using the bottom ring combined with a zip-tie (or light monofilmanent fishing line) that can be broken if you are ever stuck.

The other trick to proper anchor management is having a buoy on board that you attach to your anchor line (that can quickly release from your kayak). This is ideal when you are fighting big fish that you need to chase down and don't have time to pull up your anchor (or want to keep your spot).

Watch Tony Acevedo from Salt Strong show how he quickly rigs this anchor up for a quick release.
