Welcome to the sixth and final episode of our Paint Defects 101 series. Kevin Ansell, 3M application engineer, wraps up the series by explaining what swirl marks are, how to identify them, and how to fix them.

Wear proper PPE: safety glasses, protective gloves, respirator and whatever else you need for the job. This video is intended for a professional setting such as a body shop or paint shop. Make sure to check OEM recommendations to confirm you’re using the correct adhesive for the job.

What are Swirl Marks (00:56)
Also known as holograms.

Getting Started Repairing Swirl Marks (01:07)

Completely refine all the scratches from the previous step in your paint finishing process.

Use a foam pad and machine polish.

There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
