What a treat we had
What a treat we had today to see not one but two young eagles fly into the nest tree! Juvenile and immature bald eagles can show a lot of variation in their plumage. These terms sometimes are used interchangeably but ornithologists define them as follows:
"A Juvenile bald eagle is an individual in its first plumage. The juvenile plumage replaces the coat of down while the eaglet is still in the nest.
An immature or sub-adult bald eagle is an individual older than one year that has replaced the juvenile plumage for an immature plumage." I am including a link to an article with photos that will show detailed information on the various stages of the juvenile to adult bald eagle to help in recognizing their ages.

E21 is on the outer attic when the first visitor flies to the U branch and E21 is vocal and not happy. E21 will fly to the attic to be closer to the nest to defend it. Beautiful closeups of the visitor shows its beak is just starting to change to yellow at the edges and its eyes are starting to lighten up. There are a few marks on its feet most likely from fighting.
The immature eagle will fly off 25 minutes later as E22 is arriving back to the nest tree and lands on the swing branch. A few minutes later, a different immature eagle flies in and lands in the outer branch! This one has clean feet with no marks and a different coloring pattern and lighter eyes with a little more white in its tail. It's beak is still dark and has not begun to change color at this point. This visitor does not stay long and flies off toward the west. E22 will lie down in the nest as E21 stays on the attic keeping watch. Thank you for watching!
