The Grandaddy of all the ‘Joak’ or ‘Joke’ tunes, this must surely be a strong contender for the title of ‘Most Popular Folk Tune’ in the English tradition. Dating from at least the early Eighteenth Century, it is hard to overstate just how quickly its popularity spread. Fabulous though the tune is, that popularity may well have been assisted by tune’s association with one of the rudest songs in the English repertoire!
