The Wittig Reaction is a little tricky because both E and Z alkenes can be formed by it and usually students forget this important point. It really just depends on the Ylide that is being used. If the ylide contains a group on the negatively charged carbon that
can resonate and stabilize the Ylide, then you will get a E alkene product. Otherwise if the Ylide just contains a carbon chain with no resonance, all you get is a Z alkene product.
