When we bring it closer to the object, the object looks bigger than its actual size. If you try touching the glass you will find that its middle part is thicker as compared to the outer part. Such a lens which is thicker at the center as compared to edges is called a convex lens. When sunlight falls on it, it is possible to adjust the lens so as to obtain a sharp dot. That means the parallel rays from sun pass through convex lens and meet at a common point. The meeting of rays at common point is known as  convergence. Since convex lens is able to converge light rays therefore it is also called converging lens. Because of the two surfaces bulging outwards this lens is also called double convex lens.

The lens which is thinner at the center as compared to edges is called a concave lens. When parallel rays fall on it the rays does not meet at common point but these appears to diverge from a common point. The spreading of rays from one point to different directions is called divergence. As concave lens is able to diverge light therefore concave lens is also called diverging lens. Also as it has two surfaces curved inwards therefore this lens is also called double concave lens.
