Behind-the-meter electricity: what does it mean?

Imagine your energy meter sits on your front door - everything behind the door (in your house or your business or building or community) is 'behind-the-meter' energy. It can be used onsite without passing through the meter. Traditionally, this meant stuff you could switch on and off - kettles, TVs, etc. - but as our energy system becomes increasingly decentralised, it also refers to stuff like domestic solar panels and battery energy storage systems.
