Wifi For Thick Walls using a HomePlug ft. Asus ZenWifi AX Hybrid
This is marketed as a wifi for thick walls, but upon checking and digging in a bit deeper, I found out that this is not just a marketing term that they coined for this specific product but rather, there is an underlying technology that comes with it.
To understand this better, let us first define what a “Homeplug” is, it is a trademark technology by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance that aims to develop standards for technology to enable devices to communicate with each other through the use of existing electrical wirings.
You see, when you look at it, it does look like your average wifi router, however, this right here makes this all special, and these plugs feature what is called as “Homeplug AV2 MIMO”. Now what this does it transmits bandwidth over electrical circuits for up to 1300 Mbps! However to achieve this, you need to plug this three pronged plug into the sockets and have another one of these to another socket so that they will both interconnect. Now, this technology is really new to me, as I am used to routers just bouncing the signal off of one another or use cat5 wires in order to amplify the signal, but on this case, this is a different one. To make this work, a three pronged socket must be present in your home as the neutral conductor is the frequency carrier.
I did some research and it appears that this technology is not new, there are already articles that were written since 2001, however, I’m still baffled why this is not widely adapted, and I have a few theories, 1 is that in south east asia, we do not use the three pronged sockets, instead we use the two sockets making it difficult to adapt to this technology. Number two is that in terms of security, theoretically, you can access the network without the use of a cat5 cable and still have the same physical access by just plugging in the main power supply but of course there are some workarounds for this such as built in encryptions and maintaining a list of authorized mac addresses and things that we can’t discuss here as this video will take a long time to finish, besides that, if security is really important to you then you should assume already that no network is really secure as each one has its own vulnerability. Third one is power consumption, as you will be using your plugs to transmit bandwidths, although I haven’t tested it yet, might present an additional cost in terms of power consumption. The last and fourth one is interference, there are areas with high power interference or areas that do not have the standardized allocated radio spectrum and it may or may not bleed the bandwidth that is being transmitted through the sockets, especially if you use UPS and Surge protectors before the said plug. Of course, all of this are just theories, but hit me up in the comment below if you have more information regarding this technology.
All in all, this technology is really viable if in case you are living in a house with thick walls, instead of putting up another cat5 line towards another room or floor, using this mesh setup might be better as you will only need the power source in order to obtain fast reliable connectivity.
