Chironex fleckeri, commonly known as 'sea wasp’ or 'stinger”, is a species of box jellyfish found in coastal waters in northern Australia. It has been described as “the most lethal jellyfish in the world” with at least 63 known deaths in Australia from 1884 to 1996. Awareness of the dangers associated with 'stingers’ are a part of the Darwin lifestyle, as reported in this news item from 1989.
