I have interviewed many World War II veterans in my career.  And many were described to me as heroes and indeed performed acts of heroism.  But there was none the equal of Jimmy Doolittle.  When I interviewed him, he rejected the idea that he was a hero.  It was a title that bothered him and he refused to define himself as one.  A classic example of this "I'm just another I am just another soldier like you" attitude, took place during the North African air campaign during World War II when Jimmy would jump into the back of a bomber about to take off to experience what the pilot and others were experiencing.  Young pilots were shocked that he didn't take command but he preferred to see how they were doing.  1 of many stories and actions that convinced me that indeed Jimmy Doolittle was the definition of an American hero.  So I felt very fortunate when I got the chance to make a documentary on him when he was in his mid-80s.  I spent weeks with him and the men who had followed him on the incredible & dramatic Tokyo Raid, and I could feel the measure of the man and his dedication to his duty without regard for his safety or to make any profit etc. What a leader he was.
