The British Rail Class 800 AT300 is a type of bi-mode multiple unit train built by Hitachi for Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway. They use electric motors for traction, but in addition to operating on track with overhead electric wires, they have diesel generators to operate on unelectrified track. The trains were assembled at the Hitachi Newton Aycliffe facility, alongside the related Class 801 from bodyshells shipped from Japan. Alongside their resemblance to the Class 801, the units are also very similar to the Class 802 units, which in difference have uprated diesel engines and larger fuel tanks.

As part of its production, the Class 800 is a part of the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) and is in the Hitachi AT300 product family. Their respective train operating company has also given the units separate brands; under Great Western Railway, they are known as Intercity Express Trains (IET) and under London North Eastern Railway, they are known as Azuma.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is a British train operating company owned by the Department for Transport (DfT), unlike most UK train operating companies. LNER operates the InterCity East Coast franchise providing long-distance inter-city services on the ECML from London King's Cross to North East England and Scotland.

The company is owned by the Department for Transport (DfT). LNER took over the InterCity East Coast franchise in June 2018, after privately owned operator Virgin Trains East Coast returned it to the government following sustained financial difficulties. The DfT intended for the company to provide services until a new public–private partnership could be established in 2020. In July 2019, it was announced that LNER had been given a direct-award to run services beyond 28 June 2020 until 2025.

GB Railfreight is a rail freight company in the United Kingdom.

GB Railfreight was founded in 1999 by GB Railways. Unlike competitors DB Cargo UK and Freightliner, the company was not formed from parts of the privatised British Rail freight sectors.
An operator's licence was granted in July 2000. In June 2007, the business was renamed First GBRf.

In 2009, First GBRf was granted a passenger licence allowing it to operate charter services.

Reading West railway station serves West Reading, Berkshire, about 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the town's main retail and commercial areas. The station is served by local services operated by Great Western Railway.

To the north of the station the line crosses a railway bridge over the Oxford Road, followed by Oxford Road Junction, which is the southern apex of a triangle of tracks. The tracks to the west curve round to join the Great Western Main Line towards Bristol at Reading West Junction, and are largely used by freight trains between Southampton Docks and points to the north.

The station has two platforms, which were linked by a footbridge until it was demolished as part of the electrification of the Reading to Newbury line. There is a ticket office on the up (Reading-bound) platform, which is open only in the morning, and canopies provide some shelter on each platform. There is separate pedestrian access to the northern end of both platforms from Oxford Road, together with access to the southern end of the down platform from Tilehurst Road.
