Why is my engine stumbling on start up and then working hard to just get to idle speed?

The engine would start but stumbled and hung well below idle speed. Then it would finally stumble its way up to normal idle speed and then ran fine. What was wrong. This was a weird one and the first time I ever saw this. I had no idea this could happen.
