DR. RODGERS: Celiac disease can be difficult to diagnose because it affects people differently.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Celiac disease occurs in people who react to gluten. Gluten is found naturally in wheat, barley, and rye and can be added to many prepackaged foods.

The only way to know if you have Celiac disease is to get tested. Celiac disease can be hard to diagnose because some of its symptoms are like the symptoms of other diseases.

If your doctor thinks you might have Celiac disease you may need a blood test and biopsy. Before the blood test it is important to be on your regular diet. If not, the results could be wrong.

A biopsy involves taking a tiny piece of tissue from your small intestine. The tissue will be viewed with a microscope to look for signs of Celiac disease damage.
