0:18 - Pathfinder Panel: Exclude Mode
Within the Shape Modes section of the Pathfinder panel are 4 buttons. Each combine two or more shapes using different methods. With two overlapping shapes, the Exclude mode creates a group of shapes that look like the original two shapes, minus any overlapping areas. This is a destructive technique with the original artwork lost.

1:36 - Creating a Compound Shape
If the Alt/Option key is held down while executing the Exclude mode, a Compound Shape is created. The result is visually the same as the first method. However, this is a non-destructive technique with the original shape paths remaining. Using the Direct Selection Tool, it is possible to move the original shapes relative to each other while still retaining the Exclude look.

3:23 - Expanding a Compound Shape
With a Compound Shape selected, clicking on the Expand button within the Pathfinder panel will convert the artwork into a Compound Path. To further expand this Compound Path, under the Object menu, in the Compound Path section is the Release option. The final result will be visually identical to that of the Compound Shape but what remains will be a series of stand alone paths.
