Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: I saw an old interview with Joe Pass where he mentioned something called "Gliss Technique." He said how this technique helps a guitarist better perform horn phrases on the guitar. I couldn't find any video lessons on YouTube that discuss Gliss Technique for guitar. Can you help clear up this mysterious topic? Thank you for all the work you put into your lessons.
- Novak, Czech Republic.
A: In today's guitar conversations we tend to use a number of terms that can be considered as "gliss techniques" on guitar such as; sweeps, rake technique, slides and even to a certain extent bends. But, the term "gliss" which is plural for "glissando" means that we are (in some manner) gliding over to another note, or even a group of notes. For example, a sweep would be a gliss technique, and a slide of "one" note over to another note would be glissando. And, Joe Pass was certainly correct in that, this technique helps to create horn-like phrasing on the guitar.
