UV radiation is a known cause of skin cancers such as Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma.

UVB penetrates the epidermis and causes sunburns while also increasing the risk of skin cancer. In response to UV damage, cells called melanocytes release a pigment called melanin that provides some protection from sunlight.

UVA can also increase skin cancer risk, but is mostly involved in accelerating skin ageing. UVA damages the elasticity of the skin, making it more prone to wrinkling and sagging.
