We are in a series where we are talking about the real issues of our day. What does the Bible say about sex, sexuality and gender?  We have to be honest with people about what Christ calls them to, while at the same time not setting up barriers in front of them that frankly, God did not set up in front of us. God did not look at you (whatever your struggle is) and say when you stop doing this thing, then you can have a relationship with Christ. No. While you were a sinner, while I was a sinner, Christ met us there.

1. Can you be LGBT and be a Christian? Does being LGBT send you to hell?
• Christ did not wait for us to clean up our lives in order to be worthy of  salvation. (Rom. 5:7-8)
• We are made righteous because of the work of Christ on the cross.  (1 Cor. 6:9-11)
• We have a responsibility to grow in our righteousness in Christ. (1 Cor. 6:18-19)
2. What do you say to the person who asks, “Why did God make me this way?” • As image-bearers of God, you are wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:13-15)
• The impact of sin from the Fall is devastating across all of creation. (Rom. 5:12) • God has allowed this in your life to display His good work in you. (John 9:1-3) • God has chosen not to remove this area of suffering. (2 Cor. 12:7-9) • You have to trust in His goodness and His plan for you. (Rom. 8:28)
• You have to believe in eternity and God’s plan to reward sacrifice greatly.  (Rom. 8:18)
3. How do I respond as a parent if my child says they identify as LGBT? • Listen -- Be quick to hear and slow to speak.
• Express your love and your support as God’s grace-bearer and truth-teller in  their lives.
• Recognize there will be tension between how you each define your  identity/belief.
• Decide together – “Can we love each other and even accept each other without  agreeing with each other?”
• Find support from the church and other parents who are walking this journey  together.
4. As Christians, how do we navigate these issues in daily life?
o Should I attend a gay wedding?
o Do I use pronouns for someone who transitions?
o Should I allow a gay couple to stay in my home overnight?
• Is the Bible clear on this issue?
• Where is my conscience on this issue before God? (Rom. 14:14)
• How do I live out my faith while showing love in order to be a light for  Christ? (1 Cor. 9:21-23; 2 Tim. 1:8)
5. What does the Bible say about pornography and masturbation?
• The Bible does not address the issue of masturbation directly, but it is often  connected with porn in reality.
• Pornography falls under the prohibitions against sexual immorality and lust.  (Matt. 5:27-28; Col. 3:5)
• Pornography is one of the most destructive forces in the world today.  (1 Cor. 6:18)
• If you are addicted or even struggling, you will not overcome it alone.  (Gal. 6:1-2)

6. How do we approach these issues as a church?
• We are to actively look for ways to reach all people with the Good News. • We can be welcoming to all people without affirming all lifestyles.
• We live in the messiness of grace while always speaking with the clarity of  truth.
• We need a more robust theology and vision of singleness in the church. • We have to create better support systems for individuals and their families.
