The Mongol Empire, spanning the 13th and 14th centuries, was the largest contiguous empire in history, extending from present-day Mongolia to parts of Eastern Europe, the Indian subcontinent, and the Levant.

It emerged from the unification of nomadic tribes under Genghis Khan in 1206 and rapidly expanded under his descendants, connecting East and West through trade and cultural exchange along the Silk Road.

The empire began to fracture due to succession disputes after the death of Möngke Khan in 1259.
These conflicts led to the division of the empire into four khanates: the Golden Horde, the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate, and the Yuan Dynasty.
Internal strife and external pressures eventually caused the disintegration of these khanates, with the Ilkhanate falling first in the mid-14th century, followed by the Yuan Dynasty's loss of control over China and the collapse of the Golden Horde.
