He has worked in many mediums including painting, printmaking, sculpture and poetry. Among his most famous works of art are his hearts and his drawings of common tools. Born in Ohio, Jim Dine's mother passed away when he was twelve. He subsequently went to live with one of his grandfathers who owned a hardware store. Dine has credited working daily in the hardware store as having a large influence on his artistic career. He learned to see tools as a means of creation.
As the Pop Art movement grew in the U.S., artists like Andy Warhol made using mass-produced consumer products in art commonplace.
While most people label Jim Dine's work as pop art, many who have taken a closer look at his work would disagree. Instead, his art is seen by some as having strong ties to the Neo-Dada or Abstract Expressionist movements.
