"Great recordings of 100 years
"Great recordings of 100 years ago"
1910 was a great year for Victor/HMV in my opinion; both Caruso and McCormack made several of their all time greatest recordings that year. Since this is the year 2010, I am going to do a little series called 'Great recordings of 100 years ago,' where I try to post recordings that were recorded exactly 100 years ago to the day of my posting them. This is a 14 March 1910 Victor/HMV recording of the Mme. Butterfly Act 3 arietta 'Addio fiorito asil', sung as only Enrico Caruso could sing it. Antonio Scotto was the baritone. 14 March 2010 was only a week ago.
Trivia: according to Victor, this recording was Take 1, which means it was technically 'live'. So yes, there are 'live' Caruso recordings after all! In fact, about 75-80% of all his recordings were done in only 1 or 2 takes.
I will try to post more Caruso and McCormack recordings in the coming months.
