These sailors are being pepper sprayed!
Oleoresin capsicum, or OC spray, which many know better as pepper spray, contains the active ingredient capsaicin, which is the chemical that makes chili peppers taste so hot. Originally created as a defense against dangerous animals like bears and wolves, it’s now used as a less than lethal form of crowd control and self defense.
Here it’s being used as part of a security reaction force class, where the sailors are hit in the eyes with the OC spray and then must try to fight back against attackers while barely being able to see.
Only after the test is complete are they finally allowed to wash off the painful chemical spray which one sailor described as feeling like sandpaper being constantly rubbed on your eyes.
