Motorola MPX220 – Windows Mobile 2003 in a sexy package

It’s the year 2004 #pastfuturetechnology.

Motorola’s work-of-art, the MPX220 is not Japanese. GSM never existed in Japan nor did Motorola release a 3G version of the MPX220. This Windows Mobile device existed in the Americas and Europe and is to this day one of the sexiest flip phones that I know. And not only does it look good, it’s also rather functional.

Whilst many might not look back fondly at the Desktop-gone-Mobile OS, one has to say that Windows, probably a bit like Nokia, stuck to what they knew. Technical solutions.

Operating Windows ME or XP on a Desktop was one thing, but trying to replicate the same journey on a mobile device which is fragments smaller than a desktop, and you’re bound to find annoyance-factors.

Having said that, the phone offered much of what modern smartphones or Android feature phones would offer. And in some ways it wasn’t really all that different. The lack of a touch-screen really didn’t make the MPX220 less of a smartphone. After all, the O2 Compaq PDA’s with their QVGA touch screens were quite something. But the MPX220, despite its miniscule 176 x 220px TFT LCD, could hold its own.

Expandable memory via MiniSD, Bluetooth & IrDA connectivity and a 1.3Mpx Camera made this “smartphone” as good as any other. Access to a file explorer, MSN services including Messenger and Outlook, task managers and organisers, games and many customisable Windows features were features that other phones could only dream of. Being reachable via the “internet” was new – e-mail and MSN chats on a phone – now that belonged in the “Business” category of devices that were ridiculously heavy and overpriced. But not so the MPX220 – at 110g and the usual fold factor size for 2004, it was compact and stylish. The price tag of around USD399 on a 24-month contract sounds still high, but XDA’s were that and more and often limited in availability.
