In this Saxophone Geek video I am playing my two Selmer soloist tenor saxophone mouthpieces. Both were un-played originals that have been refaced to a modern size tip opening. The first mouthpiece is freshly refaced and the second one I have been playing on for six or seven years. Both mouthpieces were refaced two almost the same specs by the same mouthpiece refacer. Nonetheless, they do play a bit different from each other. I’m using two brand-new reeds found both of these mouthpieces for the playtest. I found that the mouthpiece is do play different. I’ve had a string of bad reads as the weather changes from Spring to summer, and I’m trying to figure out if there is an issue with ‘reed friendliness” with the newer refaced mouthpiece. Let me know what you think of the sound on these two mouthpieces and if you think the reeds make any difference. I am using Vandoren Java #4 - for whatever its worth. Sometimes we get so obsessed about gear that we end up too far down the rabbit hole. What’s really most important is that the mouthpieces helps you get the sound you are hearing and is fairly easy to play. Reeds are so expensive nowadays that you really want every reed to play as good as it can on your mouthpiece. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to saxophone geek!
