China revealed a new fully 120mm automated mortar.

The weapon took three years to develop, and can fire the latest Chinese guided ammunition.

The report claims traditional mortars can take 20 minutes to set up and adjust, while the new mortar can fire from vehicle directly.

A traditional mortar in combat environment can accumulate error of positions, could take 67 steps to adjust. The fire control system automatically calculates firing parameters, and the whole process only takes 30 seconds.

The new 120mm mortar is vehicle-based, a high maneuverability vehicle provides armor protection.

The smart 120mm ammunition is packed with multiple rocket motors to adjust trajectory, achieving high accuracy. With the new export smart ammunition, the accuracy is proven in the video to be around 0.7-0.8 meter.

And more high precision ammunitions are being designed to achieve even better result. The new mortar can also fire all standard 120mm rounds.

The smart ammunition has reduced explosive due to internal space being taken by more electronics. But the accuracy makes impact greater than ever, and can be used in traditional 120mm mortars. It is reported that Chinese Army and Marine Corps are more relying on vehicle-based mortars.

This new system is not yet adopted by PLA, but the possibility is high based on the report.

It can also be mounted on tracked armored vehicles, ships, and other types of common Chinese trucks. And the new mortar will be able to attract foreign buyers based on its performance and price point.

In this design rockets are used to adjust trajectory, but in future aerodynamic surfaces can be adopted. Aerodynamic "fins" can provide better adjustment capability and will not run out of rocket fuel.

Comparing the traditional 120mm rounds, a smart around can better disable protected targets.

The new 120mm mortar has very low launch signature, makes enemy hard to spot its location.

The new system will also be a part of Chinese latest ground combat information network.

The new system will also be a part of Chinese latest ground combat information network. This new automated mortar in a network system would be ideal for high-altitude areas, like Tibet and Xinjiang.
