South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and Chinese President Jiang Zemin have agreed to build a comprehensive partnership between the two countries toward the 21st century.
Kim and Jiang reaffirmed in a meeting in Beijing on Thursday that China and South Korea would work for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeastern Asia.
Economic cooperation topped the agenda in a bilateral meeting between China and South Korea on Thursday.
During his five day visit President Kim Dae-jung is scheduled to meet Premier Zhu Rongji and other senior Chinese leaders as well as visiting Shanghai, China's second city and economic showcase.
The two countries, which only opened diplomatic ties six years ago, are already each other's third largest trading partners.
In 1997 they exchanged 23-point-7 (b) billion dollars (U-S) worth of goods.
China is also North Korea's last remaining major Communist ally and South Korea prizes Beijing's role in bringing stability to the divided peninsula.
China, which fought on North Korea's side during the 1950-53 war, is working with the U-S to mediate peace talks between the two Koreas, which are still technically at war.
Kim wants China to hire South Korean companies to help construct some of the nuclear reactors it plans to meet energy requirements.
In return Beijing wants South Korea to buy more Chinese food and animal feed in a bid to reduce China's 3-point-5 (b) dollars (U-S) trade deficit.
On the eve of the summit officials from both sides agreed on a new treaty on fishing boundaries, establishing a joint fishing zone halfway between the two countries.
Today's signing involved agreements on visa restrictions and youth exchanges.
Kim will visit Shanghai on Saturday and from there he will fly to Kuala Lumpur to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
