Australia’s biggest international air combat training activity, Exercise Pitch Black, has been underway in the skies over the Northern Territory. The exercise kicked off with a public flying display at Mindil Beach on the 18th of July, and an open day at the R-double-A-F Base Darwin on the 20th. The exercise will continue through to the 2nd of August. There are around one-hundred-and-forty aircraft and over 4-thousand personnel from 20 nations participating this year. Which makes it the largest participation in the 43-year history of Pitch Black. Aircraft from France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States; and embedded personnel from Canada and New Zealand are participating. Also, and for the first time, there are aircraft and personnel from Philippines, Spain, Italy, and Papua New Guinea and embedded personnel from Fiji and Brunei. Pitch Black gives the participating air forces one of the biggest military training air-spaces in the world to play out various scenarios with a wide range of aircraft and battle-space systems. Here's a sample of some of the activity that's been going on in the Northern Territory.
