On October 29, 2013 Murphy was posthumously bestowed the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor, the supreme military honor within the Texas Military Forces.
Each of the Texas affiliates of the leading broadcast media (CBS, ABC, NBC) honored Murphy with almost two minutes of coverage each some 40 plus years after his untimely death in a plane crash.
