Society And Culture: The term society refers to :
A group of individuals
Involved in persistent social interaction
Sharing the same geographical or social territory
Sharing the same political authority
Dominant cultural expectations
The term society is derived from the Latin word “Socius” which means companionship or friendship.
It is a group of people who form a semi-closed system.
It is a network of relationship between people.
An organized group of persons associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic or other purposes.
Characteristics of society :
Well planned uniformity
Stability and equilibrium between different parts
Consensus of the main values
Every institutions has a function which helps society to remain stable
What is good “natural selection” of good institutions /functions.
Help to regulate the cultural functions in the society.
Population And Society: Social processes closely linked with human population.
There is linkages between population and society at various levels :
National
Regional
Village
Household
Individuals
Population Studies As A Branch Of Social Sciences: Social sciences include :
Sociology
Economics
Psychology
Political science
Anthropology
Economist are interested in economic aspects of demographic phenomena.
Psychologist focus on individuals differences.
Political scientist explain everything in terms of power and forms of state.
Anthropologists also interested in :
Culture
Belief system
Symbolic communication
Pattern of interaction
Behavior and values
Social historians examine historical root of population change :
Rise and fall of death rate
Migration
Nuptiality (marriage)
Sociologist claim that they study population variables in term of social structure.
Sociologist who take whole society as the level of analysis are in a better position to explain differences between different societies and culture.
Sociologist have the advantage of freely borrowing concepts and methodologies from all other branches of social science.
Population research was dominated by statisticians and economists.
