The first law granting U.S. citizenship by naturalization was the Naturalization Act of 1790. This law allowed naturalization to "free white person(s)", which excluded persons of color. This chapter discusses the early immigration laws from 1790 to 1914 which include The Chinese Exclusion Act and Alien Land Laws.
