It's Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Mejia shows us what can result from too much sun exposure on your skin. His patient had Mohs micrographic surgery performed and unfortunately, it sometimes can leave a large defect.

Dr. Mejia does plastic surgery reconstruction to pull the skin back together after Mohs and about a week later the stitches will come out and it will be hard to ever notice there was anything on your skin prior.

Why did this skin cancer come about? Well, early on this patient did not wear sunscreen,  and had multiple sunburns from surfing, fishing and boating.

If you want to prevent skin cancer, cover up and wear sunblock (at least spf 30 or greater). Reapply sunblock every couple of hours and even before you go out. Also wear long-sleeve clothing, and a hat, and just try your best not to get sunburned. Seek the shade when you can.

Multiple sunburns before the age of 25-35 almost guarantee a basal cell carcinoma.
